I write a short synopsis, the original language title, and any alternate names. Subtitles are even harder. For rare films in languages I do not know, I pay a translator to create subtitles. That costs money, but it is the only way to make the film watchable for others. I store the subtitle files in the same folder as the video.
Redundancy and backup strategies
I keep three copies of every film. One copy on a primary drive I use for daily access. One copy on a separate backup drive that stays offline most of the time. One copy on a remote server a friend hosts in exchange for access to my collection. This triple redundancy protects against drive failure, theft, or fire in my apartment. I refresh the backups every six months. The process is tedious, but losing a film is worse.
Future-proofing your collection in a changing digital world
File formats change. Codecs become obsolete. What plays fine today might not open in ten years. I store video files in MKV containers using H.264 encoding because it is widely supported. I avoid proprietary formats that need special software. I also keep a portable drive with a media player software on it, in case I need to play files on a computer without internet access. My goal is to make the collection accessible to anyone with a basic computer, even decades from now. I am not sure if I will succeed, but I keep trying.
